Milwaukee Streetcar system on its way?

March 17th, 2009

sc

AWESOME. I’ve been looking forward to something like for a long time.

From JSOnline.com:

Ending a 17-year-long dispute, Congress has thrown its support behind a modern streetcar system in downtown Milwaukee.

With local officials deadlocked over how to spend $91.5 million in long-idle federal transit aid, Sen. Herb Kohl and Rep. David Obey quietly inserted a provision in the massive federal omnibus spending bill to hand 60% of the money to the city for a downtown rail line and 40% to Milwaukee County for buses. President Barack Obama signed the $410 billion package into law Wednesday.

That’s a victory for Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who has championed a downtown streetcar loop, and a defeat for County Executive Scott Walker, who has fought the concept and wanted all the money to go to buses. Kohl and Obey, both Wisconsin Democrats, acted at the urging of Barrett, their former congressional colleague.

Modern streetcars resemble light rail vehicles, but are smaller and less expensive. Otherwise, they spur the same kind of debate as light rail: Supporters say a fixed rail system stimulates economic development and provides a transportation option that is attractive to both visitors and residents, while opponents say it’s too costly and isn’t as flexible as a bus line.

As envisioned by Barrett, the streetcars would run in a three-mile loop that links downtown destinations to the Amtrak-Greyhound station. It would connect not only with existing trains and buses but also tie in with proposals for commuter rail and high-speed trains.

Université Laval – innovation in admission

March 16th, 2009

I studied at Université Laval (located in Québec City, QC, Canada) last May-June and took part in a 5 week intensive french program. Learned a lot, met tons of people, and grew up a bit.

Just found this on their website. One of the COOLEST ways I can think of to market their programs. They’ve got 375 of them, so this is a great tool to see what’s available for a prospective student.

ulaval1

The above means “Tell us what interests you” (in French). All you do at the website is insert your interest and it tells you what programs they have at the university that can suit your needs. A little less personal than a tour – but much more user-oriented and just plain fun to use.

They’ve also got a nice little ULAVAL logo banner on the bottom right:

monde

“The world needs new ideas.”

I agree. And for those interested, this is a GREAT university to check out, even if just on vacation.

Tweetdeck, now with Facebook support.

March 16th, 2009

I’ve been using Tweetdeck for a couple months now on my laptop running Windows 7 and we use it for our MUTV Twitter account at work on our Mac Pro – and no complaints on either platform.

With the new Facebook and assumedly updated API comes the new version of Tweetdeck Beta…complete with support for viewing Facebook Statuses, as well as updating your Facebook and Twitter accounts simultaneously. I use ping.fm for that since it also hits MySpace and other social networks, but this is a really good tool nonetheless. Click here to check out the article from WashingtonPost / TechCrunch.

This just dropped today on the QN5 Blog - thanks to my peeps on the RSE Street Team messageboard for alerting me. These dudes are good enough before you put my man Slug in the mix..but NOW..WHOO. Great track, although a little depressing on such a nice (almost) spring day we’re having in Milwaukee (and the rest of the Midwest, I hear).

Abstract Rude leaks title track “Rejuvenation” off of “Rejuvenation”

March 13th, 2009

Just some personal juice to add to this first…

I got to check this album out last year about this time and absolutely love it. I’ve been a huge fan of Ab Rude for years now, since Swollen Members got me into rap in the first place and he collabs with them frequently. It’s made me happy to see him pop up now and then on Rhymesayers albums like Grayskul’s Deadlivers…and when I was told he got signed I was ecstatic. One of the nicest dudes with the best flow I’ve heard in awhile – not to mention the uniquely deep voice he’s got. Definitely money well spent for those of you pre-ordering. Make it happen. Enjoy!

As a product of the legendary Goodlife open mic sessions, Abstract Rude splashed onto the scene in 1994 as part of the famed Project Blowed crew that included LA’s Freestyle Fellowship and Aceyalone. As one half of the A-Team (with Aceyalone), one third of Haiku D’Etat (with Aceyalone & Myka 9) and frontman of his group Abstract Tribe Unique (ATU), Ab Rude has endeared himself to fans worldwide through consistent touring and genre defining albums such as 1999’s South Central Thynk Tank (currently out of print). Once signed to the Beastie Boys Grand Royal imprint, Ab has readied himself to re-emerge with Rhymesayers Entertainment and his most consistent and focused work to date, Rejuvenation. Produced entirely by Seattle super producer Vitamin D (G-Unit, Redman, Young Buck, Gift of Gab, Choklate, Lifesavas, Black Sheep, etc.), Rejuvenation is a hard hitting soulful ryde showcasing Ab Rude’s distinct and unlimited vocal styling.

Ab’s new record “Rejuvenation” drops May 5, 2009 on Rhymesayers Entertainment. That might be a little long for you to wait, so to hold you over download the title track “Rejuvenation” (right click to download…) off of the new record for free!

The album is also available for pre-order today from Fifth Element so be sure to head over and pre-order your copy today at a special reduced price for a limited time only!

You can never go home.

March 12th, 2009

It’s weird being in Waukesha for a couple days with not much to do. Usually I just come home to get my snowboarding instructing thing done and then I go back to campus. Besides winter breaks, I don’t think I’ve spent a full two weeks in Waukesha since I moved onto the Marquette campus in June of 2006. It’s weird to think that.

It’s so strange driving by places like coffee shops, stores, restaurants, and workplaces that used to be really important and significant. I drove past the church where we had the funeral for my friend Josh today and it got me thinking about this whole thing. “Home” to me is kind of relative. I was born in Duluth, MN (three months early) since the Ashland, WI hospital couldn’t deal with a baby so premature. After living in a Duluth incubator for a few months, I finally got to go to Ashland to hang with my parents for the rest of my life. After Ashland brought Mankato, MN, and then Waukesha, WI. My dad was (he retired a few months ago!) a library administrator and found himself writing and directing various libraries in these two states since he and my mom got married. Waukesha is the place where I experienced two deaths of friends, lost my favorite cat, got my first job, saw my parents get divorced, lived in 6 different homes, was in school from second grade to senior year of High School, met most of my best friends, recovered from two major jaw surgeries, and learned to appreciate nearly everything. Being an only child is weird sometimes, but I don’t think I’d trade it for anything – it gives me more time to think, rather than to talk (although I do talk a lot)…

I don’t really identify Waukesha as “home”. You’ll notice “Hometown” on my Facebook isn’t even there. It’s not that I don’t like Waukesha…but I’m not FROM here. Am I from Milwaukee now that I live there for school?

Being around here is just odd. Seeing new buildings being built everywhere, discovering that some have gone out of business, and watching old streets get paved over is just another stage of evolution in this suburb.

What I like most is seeing old friends and their families. A former Assistant Scoutmaster came in to the Ace Hardware store where I’ve worked for 8 years tonight when I was working on some computers and we talked for 20 minutes about what we’re all doing now that we’re getting close to graduating, so to speak. It really makes me miss those camping trips every weekend with my best friends and their parents, cooking over a fire, and learning tons of things I never though I would use again in my life. It’s awesome to know that I have friends studying in Mexico, Canada, France, Spain, and other places all over the world. Watching myself and my friends build niches all over the place doing the things we love with all kinds of people. One weird thing is realizing that next year if I go back to my former High School to speak to French classes…they won’t know me. What?! Not to brag…but people knew me in High School. I’m not sure why. I like to think because I didn’t seclude myself to one clique or group. I wasn’t on any sports teams – I was the kid with no jaw who spoke french and was in Young Liberals. I shouldn’t have been so “popular”, but I was for whatever reason.

Anyway…this will probably just bore you people, but I just thought I’d write it somewhere. For those of you still young enough or choosing to live at your “home”, don’t take it for granted. We’ve all gotta grow up somewhere, and I’ve found it’s best to just figure yourself out where you’re most comfortable.

“Illinoize” – Sufjan Stevens Hip-hop mashup

March 11th, 2009

So I caught this on a messageboard a few minutes ago…GREAT mashup. Personally I’ve never really listened to Sufjan much, but I’ve heard a lot about him. This is a great combo of the two genres though, without a doubt. Nice slow vibe to all the song, and beats are matched well to the lyrics.
